Silver mining - Wikipedia

Once silver ore has been removed from a mine, it is crushed into a fine powder. Silver is commonly extracted from the powdered ore by smelting or chemical leaching. Silver's melting point occurs at 962 C (1764 F, 1,235.15K). As such, industrial metallurgic processes are needed to prepare silver for commercial purposes. Ore treatment by mercury amalgamation, such as in the patio process or pan amalgamation was widely used through the 1800s, but is seldom used today.

Toxic chemicals are used in the Flotation Process to separate the copper and molybdenum out of the milled powder. This Flotation process is the major extraction method at Duval/Sierrita mine because of the poor quality of the copper at this site. Some chemicals produce bubbles that that the copper adheres to and the "bad stuff" falls to the bottom.

Mining Technology in the Nineteenth Century ONE

Miners used chemicals, heat, and electricity to process more complex metal and mineral compounds. Silver, for example, often occurs in the compound argentite (silver sulfide) or in lead compounds. Historically, the key chemical processes included amalgamation with mercury and leaching in a solution of chlorine, sodium or calcium hyposulfite (lixiviation), or cyanide.

Silver processing - The metal and its alloys Britannica

15-08-2020  Silver processing - Silver processing - The metal and its alloys: Even silver that has been fully work-hardened, either by rolling or forging, gradually recrystallizes, even at room temperature. This greatly softens the metal, making it susceptible to scratching and marring. To maintain hardness, therefore, other metals are added to form alloys that are harder, stronger, and less prone to fatigue.
